• Head: Chief Commissioner (appointed by centre).

• Advisory Council: Chief Commissioner + 9 members (3 Princely States + 6 People representatives).

• March 1951: HP made a Part C State as the centre categorized Indian states into A, B, C, D.

• Lt. Governor: Chief Commissioner post abolished; Major General Himmat Singh became the first Lt. Governor in 1952.

• Nov 1951: 1st General Elections held for 36 seats. INC won 24 seats.

• 1st CM: Dr. Y.S. Parmar.

• 1 July 1954: Bilaspur became the 5th district of HP.

• Updated Seats: 36 + 5 = 41.

• 1953: State Re-organisation Committee (SRC) formed under Chairman Justice Fazil Ali.

• 1955: Report suggested abolishing the 4-state system in favor of States and UTs.

• 1 Nov 1956: HP became a Union Territory per the State Reorganisation Act 1956.

• Lt. Governor: Bajrang Bahadur Singh.

• Territorial Council: Legislative assembly abolished; replaced by Territorial Council (Chairman: Thakur Karam Singh).

• 1 May 1960: Kinnaur became the 6th district (carved from Chinni tehsil of Mahasu).

• 1963: Territorial Council turned back into Legislative Assembly; Dr. Y.S. Parmar became CM for the 2nd time.

• 1 Nov 1966: Punjab Re-organisation added 4 hilly districts from Punjab (Kullu, Kangra, Lahaul & Spiti, Shimla).

• Area Increase: From 27,018 to 55,673 sq.km.

• 1967: Dr. Y.S. Parmar became CM for the 3rd time.

• 1968: Legislative Assembly passed a resolution to make HP a full-fledged state.

• Dec 1970: State of Himachal Pradesh Act 1970 passed.

• 25 Jan 1971: Indira Gandhi announced statehood at the Ridge, Shimla.
